	Thanks for the article[s].  I usually forget about trimming down things
	like the number of VC's running (sending init a SIGHUP after the 
	inittab edit.)  I'll have to play with the swapiness parameter a 
	bit to see how that goes.

	I'm assuming you'll cover turning off some of the (for most
	desktop users) useless startup items like nfs, rawdevices, possibably
	smbd/nmbd, sendmail/postfix, sgi-fam, even snmpd.  I know most
	of that list sounds silly for a desktop but I know admins that have
	been installing and using linux for a few years that always "install
	everything" (and, take all the install defaults too!)

	Re: the OOwriter startup times.  I find that apps generally start
	faster after the initial launch as long as I don't push it out of
	cache with a bunch of other stuff. 
	
	OOwriter after fresh bootup:   ~9 seconds
	subsequent launches:           ~3 seconds
	after changing memory options: ~3 seconds
	after another reboot:	       ~9 seconds

	I don't see any real change after tweaking the memory options
	for OOwriter (but, I'm using kde, not gnome, as you were.)
