This probably is true, but what is the value of having it without
owning the back-end which generates the data blob?

Very likely so, however you'd need to unbind hid through an echo
to a sysfs file. I can never remember how it works though, try to
search for "bind+unbind+echo".

A request for docs would not hurt. Other than that, I suspect you'll
need to sniff no matter what.
