I suppose someone could create a patch that would tell if
the companion controllers' driver is loaded.

But that message ("bad cable") surprises me ... handing a
device off to a companion should not have that failure mode.
After all, it's been handed off, so I don't know why the
hub driver is still thinking that EHCI would have a device
on that port.
