I see. So, aparently, Till wanted to query
for the manufacturer's assigned serial number
and somehow remember which ttyUSBx port
we assigned to it and assign the same number
next time.
This will be a significant change.

Even if we do it, I don't think it will help
much. Consider I wrote a program or a script,
which works with my Palms. Since I have 
only one Palm cradle attached, I always assumed
that it will always be ttyUSB0, so I often
hard-coded ttyUSB0 to some simple programs and
scripts. And I expected it to be ttyUSB0 no
matter whether I plugged the same Palm
or another one with different serial number.
Obviously, I was surprised when my Palm
was assigned ttyUSB2 because some program
still kept a file open.
