This is going to be an extremely long log, so it may be a good idea
to bump dmesg buffer size to 128KB or more, and disable timestamps,
in order to be able to use dmesg. I don't trust what klogd saves.

I tried to one-up Oliver by guessing what may be wrong, but failed.
It really looks like the enumeration simply fails. The 2.6.10 probably
uses the "old" enumeration algorithm... Actually, this can be tested
with kernel parameters "old_scheme_first" and "use_both_schemes".
