I've used the FTDI232BM before. I somehow hoped it would be easier to get the 
specs now, but it seems I'm out of luck :-/

The good news is that the FTDI232R has a TXEN signal which can be used to 
driver a RS485 transceiver. That's exactly what I need, so I'll go for that 
chip. I'll see if I can find a FTDI-based USB/RS485 converter first to test 
communications at high baud rates.
