Is it the "Error -28" in your Subject line? -28 is -ENOSPC (which explains the error message for your "cat" command). It means the driver is trying to overcommit the available bandwidth. If you build a kernel with CONFIG_USB_DEBUG turned on, you'll probably see some warning messages in the dmesg log when the error occurs.
