There is a workaround; you don't need to unload usb-storage.  All you 
have to do is this (as root):

	echo -n D >/sys/bus/usb/drivers/usb_storage/unbind

where D is the ID of the iPod.  You'll find it listed as the name of
one of the symbolic links in the same directory as the "unbind" file.
