You are right, I was running 32b on a similar but not exactly the same
machine. This exact machine fails the same way for 32b.

Machine is Dell 9200, quad core, 4GB RAM, ICH8R. Device is Olimex FT2332.

I tried all the USB ports, so it is not a bad port. Kernel is current
linus tree.

It is new machine, I've only tried a few other USB devices but they
all work. I've ordered another USBtoSerial device with a different
chip as a work around.
