USB host-to-host console

I have been managing company "headless" servers remotely from my laptop
using SSH.  When I need direct console access (e.g. network down,
hardware problem), I use a Belkin USB Serial Converter to the server
console port because my laptop, and few current generation laptops, have
a UART.  All systems use Fedora, mostly Core 6 and Core 7.

Recently even some low end servers have no UART which means the
following options:

* KVM switch - expensive and difficult to cable due to our server
locations.

* Portable monitor and keyboard - just dang difficult to carry around
and plug in.

I prefer to continue to use my laptop for server maintenance.  In order
to do this it seems I need some kind of USB host-to-host connectivity
but my research has not uncovered any obvious solutions to this.  I have
seen indications of USB host-to-host connections using PPPoEth but it
isn't clear how to set this up.

What are my hardware/software/configuration options for local comms
(primary ethernet network down) between my laptop with only USB ports to
a headless server with only USB ports?
