I'm unofficial advocate for loads of Ubuntu users who (including me) are already plagued by this and who don't have a hope of a kernel update till the next release which will also have these problems. (I can go through the hassle of building a patched kernel, most can't and Canonical won't) I'm puzzled that anyone can think that the current arrangement that can take over a year of distro-time to fix a user bug scenario isn't a very very bad thing. Blithely enabling auto-suspend like that was an interesting experiment in usability of usb devices. Now we have the results is there any need to continue the experiment? It's doing more to damage the adoption of linux than SCO did because it is hurting the adopters many of which are first timers. The only was this should go on with auto-suspend enabled by default for most devices is with user-configurable tables and userland tools to manage those tables them. If it will take too long before distros ship these tools then at least we know how many of the users feel. If we don't think it takes too long, then lets do it that way and disable auto spuspend till the tools are ready.
