This kernel failed immediately. The problem is occurring at least since 2.6.12, but I cannot install that (or older) version because it would break my machine (udev instead of devfs and other issues). I remember it working OK with Mandriva 2005LE which had 2.6.11 kernel, though. Unfortunately, I do not have a free, throw-away machine to test it on. The enclosure contains a Prolific PL-3507 FireWire & USB to IDE controller (http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/Products.asp?ID=9) and a TSB41AB2 FireWire transceiver. Short googling revealed that the Prolific chip is quite crummy.
