Can you confirm whether 2.6.18 still works?  Can you try 2.6.19, 
2.6.20, and 2.6.21?

More simply, can you try 2.6.22 and do

	echo -1 >/sys/modules/usbcore/parameters/autosuspend

before plugging in the drive?
