I wanted to do that, but it seems that after yesterday's testing the
enclosure is dead. I have powered it up right now and it doesn't react
anymore when it is plugged in to the USB port. It doesn't work even with
FireWire anymore - I get only a message in the log that the config rom
cannot be parsed properly ... I have tested it on another machine and in
Windows as well in order to rule out some strange Mandriva issue, but no
dice - it is dead.

Either the chip is fried or the flash with firmware got overwritten due
to a bug somewhere. That could explain why the usbmon log was showing no
answer from the device yesterday, after the error occurred.

I guess that solves my problem for good and the ticket can be closed :(
It seems that buying Iomega hardware doesn't prevent one from getting a
lemon.
