I'm a little confused - you mentioned two C programs, but the package I
downloaded at Oliver's hint (USBMon-0.2a.tar.tar) contains only Java code.

You're right about my mistakenly saying "debug kernel". More precisely what
I meant was that we have a Redhat image packaged by Oracle and then
re-packaged by another software company that (apparently) doesn't include
usbmon. I'd have to change the kernel, but that change would exist only in
my lab and not the field. This path would require that I convince someone to
restore usbmon to the kernel distribution.

I do not understand completely what you are implying here.
There's no such thing as a "debug kernel". If you mean a kernel
different from one shipped by distributions, then usbmon is
supposed to be enabled at all times, just like the raw socket
for the tcpdump.

Sure, why not. In fact I don't think you need to adapt anything,
it should work as is. Look at the binary API for usbmon.
There may be issues if you want to tap into usbmon's trace
from inside a kernel though. I intended for anyone needing
that to create a new reader in the same way mon_text.c and
mon_bin.c exist today.
