It could be noise in the USB cable, or a bad CRC, or invalid bit-stuffing, or a failure to receive a reply signal within the maximum bus turn-around time, or a couple of other similar things. It could be caused by a bad USB cable connection, or the wrong resistance or capacitance at one end of the cable. Or it could be caused by a failure in the card reader, like an inability to respond to commands as quickly as the desktop can send them.
