Hello!
Indeed. There was indeed an episode, or adventure, where Spock did
indeed state that. But more to the subject: I have used USB drives on
the 2.6 family, currently 2.6.18 but I plan on updating to one who's
newer soon, and they work as expected. To confirm your hypothesis we
would need to see the obvious things that are seen when you plug in
your device.
