No mystery there -- most subsystems need a rewrite!  :-)

Sure, go right ahead.  There might not be a rewrite for quite some time 
(if ever), and people may be able to make use of the autosuspend 
support.

My advice: Put as much of the support as you can into the generic
usb-serial core.
