You know, it's possible that you're running up against a USB
autosuspend problem.  A closer look at the usbmon log showed that when
you rebound the EXPHID controller to its driver, the kernel had to wake
it up.  Maybe it doesn't like being suspended.  (Although this wouldn't 
explain your dmesg log; the USB debugging indicates there was no 
autosuspend.)

Anyway, the simplest way for you to test this is to build a kernel with
CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND turned off.  It's worth a try.
