I'm sorry.  I finally found a good list archive manager at
http://marc.info/?l=linux-usb-devel&m=109880448211435&w=2 and see that
VIA USB cards are to be avoided.  I'm returning it sooner rather than
later.  If I find a patch to try before that, then great, but until
then I'm going to try to swap it for another item at Fry's, and I
think that's right now.  (I might just fail for a few days so if
you have a patch for this VIA crap loaded in your guns, go ahead and
shoot now.)
