Well, I've been using the 245R (the FIFO chip) to communicate with a uC here for about 3 months now.
I have used anything upwards of a 2.6.20 kernel and it's worked perfectly well.
It just presents itself as a serial port that ignores flow control, bit/baud/parity settings.
I've been using minicom to communicate with the device. No hassles at all.
