References please.  None of my searches revealed anything
other than proprietary solutions.

Yes it's to be borrowed from Windows, but for my information,
what would you call it for Linux?  I thought my reference
to Fuse would be enough, but I guess I should have written
FUSE.

I thought that such a filter might be able to intercept the
URB operations in some useful way, but by the sound of it
the answer is no.
