Generally two or > three of them. It certainly sounds like one of the programs in KDE is doing something to try and access ttyS1, while at the same time preventing usb-storage from working correctly. You could try enabling the usbfs_snoop=y module parameter for usbcore. Maybe the dmesg log will show which program is messing things up.
