I should have added: when the camera is in mass storage mode I *am* able to 
see the camera with sg_scan -i:

/dev/sg9: scsi20 channel=0 id=0 lun=0 [em]
    NIKON     D2Xs              1.00 [rmb=1 cmdq=0 pqual=0 pdev=0x0]

even though it won't mount.  --Paul
