My Thinkpad T42 appears to have no trouble with it or a brand new thumb
drive.

No.

The output of "lspci -v|grep HCI" is the following:

00:02.0 USB Controller: nVidia Corporation nForce2 USB Controller (rev a4) (prog-if 10 [OHCI])
00:02.1 USB Controller: nVidia Corporation nForce2 USB Controller (rev a4) (prog-if 10 [OHCI])
00:02.2 USB Controller: nVidia Corporation nForce2 USB Controller (rev a4) (prog-if 20 [EHCI])

I found a post somewhere about support for this being provided as a patch
against 2.6.22.  I guess the solution here is to get a USB card and make
sure the chip isn't by nVidia.
