This is typically a result of a SATA controller driver unable to return 
ATA output registers.

Smartctl version?
Platform?

(BTW: Please always include the first smartctl output line because it 
reports version and platform)

In this case, the above message from smartctl is bogus.
Should no longer appear with newer smartctl releases.
