do you have smartd enabled?
Then offline testing will get enabled and
offline tests then should automatically
scheduled every 4 hours.

We can also start the offline data collection with

I don't know why (I suppose caused by false info from bad firmware),
but for my disk the smartctl report does not show
that Offline testing was enabled before..

As said before:
If you want to inspect the /real/ state
of the whole device, you should run extended selftests.

e.g. If your disk has defect sectors in
areas that are not accessed in usual operation mode
they will not get detected.

But if you run selftests on the whole disk,
every segment will be checked.
