I'm sorry. I was insufficiently clear about my question.

Yes, I have a program that I can use to perform the secure erase
operation, and I am aware that this will eliminate the HPA, however
running that (secure erase) operation can take many hours.

I would like to know how to eliminate the HPA *without* having to
spend hours and hours performing a pointless secure erase operation.

I believe that there should be a way to do this, perhaps even using
smartmontools.

I am seeking some tool that will allow me to issue the ATA command
"SET MAX ADDRESS" to the drive. This command is described here:

   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Host_protected_area#How_it_works

If smartmontools simply does not have the capability to do what I want,
then please clearly say so and I will seek some other tool(s) to perform
this task.
