This info actually helped to track down the problem:

JMicron bridges transfer one byte of SMART STATUS info, the Prolific 
bridge apparently doesn't (resid=1 byte missing). The returned status 
byte was checked by smartctl without checking whether the device 
actually transferred it. This is now fixed in SVN.
