Since you referred to this drive as "external" I am guessing that you
are connecting to it via a USB bridge -- so read carefully the warnings
in the above Wiki page about trying to use Secure Erase over such a
bridge.

(You may want to contact the manufacturer of the "external drive" box to
see if they have any specific advice on this situation before you go any
further.)
