I suggest attaching the drive to a SATA controller, and booting grml,
then trying the security-erase-unit using hdparm from grml.

If the only machine where you can use a SATA controller (instead of
USB<->SATA) is a Mac, then I've never tried booting grml on a Mac, but I
assume it will work.  There seems to be a Mac-specific entry here:

Hopefully this will then make that pending sector go away by forcing it
to be overwritten with zeros, but it won't if:

. The security erase doesn't overwrite that sector

or:

. It's not really bad anyway (firmware bug is flagging it as bad, but it
isn't).
