I have one server with a megaraid controller where smartctl can't see the
individual drives - unless I use smartctl --scan. That tells me how to
properly address the individual drives. I have to use "/dev/bus/8 -d sat
megaraid,0" rather than "/dev/sda".
Have you tried --scan?
