Indeed, a second check with a USB enclosure, on a different computer,
reports the same error, plus plenty
of sector read errors in dmesg. Safe to say the drive is toast, I guess.

I didn't know that smartctl inability to reach the drive could indicate
failure.
Good to know for the future.
