Self-tests for any drive in enclosure always executed by drive in bay 0

Hi there, I'm using a 4-bay external USB enclosure type JMicron JMS539 (ID 152d:0539, full lsusb see attachment) equipped with 4 actual drives. These do show up as devices to the Linux host computer like this usb-ST4000DM_000-1F2168_000000000000-0:0 -> ../../sdb usb-ST315005_41AS_000000000000-0:1 -> ../../sdc usb-ST315005_41AS_000000000000-0:2 -> ../../sdd usb-SAMSUNG_HD204UI_000000000000-0:3 -> ../../sde I can query each of them fine with smartctl -a /dev/sd[bcde]. I can start a short self-test on the first drive with smartctl -t short /dev/sdb successfully and do find a corresponding log entry afterwards. Yet, when I start a self-test for any other drive, like smartctl -t short /dev/sdc, again the test is logged with drive sdb, the first one in the enclosure, no matter which drive I requested to test. The log for the designated drive remains unchanged (it does have entries from the time where the disk was attached to the mainboard). So it appears that the self-test command is misdirected, always to the first drive. Any idea how I could fix that?
