This suggests that smartd runs the script 
"/usr/share/smartmontools/smartd-runner" properly. It is specified in 
smartd.conf by "-M exec" directive. If "-M exec" is used, the script is 
responsible for sending mail.

The script is not part of upstream smartmontools code but part of the 
Debian (and Ubuntu) smartmontools packages.
