Thank you, I might give it a try, maybe on a Raspberry Pi 4, which I 
assume should have enough CPU power for decoding video.

My current VDR setup is on a Pi 2 and the rpihddevice plugin, without 
any graphical environment installed. One more option (or building block) 
for this hardware might be omxplayer, which would play back video via 
the proprietary Broadcom OpenMAX (omx) API.
