So i386 apps can run.  For example OO.o is still 32 bit.  Also, you
can't even build an x86_64 package without a couple of 32bit packages
installed and there are even a few needed just to install, as you
discovered with your attempt to build a xen image.

Debian's x86_64 port was done as a pure port, having no 32bit
dependencies and is thus simpler and a more clean install.  The price is
that it IS a port, and you have to jump through chroot hoops to get
i[36]86 apps to install and run.

I think RH took the harder path with their bi-arch approach but since we
are going to be dealing with 32bit apps for years to come it is also the
better solution.
