xdg-open question

hello,

I am having trouble using xdg-open to open a directory (browser).

$ xdg-open file:/home/felix/
does not work in a fresh (gnome-)terminal, but works fine
when used two or three times.

$ xdg-open /home/felix/
always works

Sometimes the issue is not reproducible at all.

I get the same flakyness when starting xdg-open from a java program
(Freeplane).

I am using GNOME3, and I see the same issue with gvfs-open (which
xdg-open seems to call). Shall I report a bug against gvfs or debug
further?
