xdg-open tel: links

As mobile Linux begins to take off - or, at least, to reach something resembling a functional state - it's becoming more and more important to be able to access telephony from other programs, for integration's sake. At least some of the dialer applications will accept a phone number or a 'tel:' link from the command line, but integrations need to know which dialer the system is using, because there's no app-agnostic solution for telephone numbers.

Web links to phone numbers already use 'tel:###...', and it's trivial for system-side integrations to do the same. All XDG would have to do is to enable xdg-open to pass those links to a default application, just like anything else it can open. And that's the problem solved!
