Hah, had some free time so I looked a bit more. Looks like stuff like
that's been already done.

I grepped around the kernel source (2.6.32) and found some references
to a powerpc virtual machine and the 440 opcodes you are likely to be
encountering. Within the current kernel there is apparently some
support for  kernel virtual machine (KVM). How extensive this is by
default in a normal build or in the default YDL kernel you are running
