According to your plan this should be up and running now. Although I
suppose no change is required since you can just edit make.conf.

This facility could be used to allow people to use both the Gentoo and
Zynot (or whatever) portage trees until Zynot is up and running with
maintenance of everything.

Let me guess, that was already the plan?

Include documentation on how to run both Zynot and Gentoo trees
simultaneously.

I don't know python and I'm forever short of time. However, I would be
happy to test porteous and help review the installation guide.
