That is, strictly speaking, a policy. We'd like to enforce it...

* When ./configure, the prefix, exec-prefix etc. must be taken from
variables, instead of hardcoding.
* The slots mechanism I proposed can carry information about these
attributes that make two packages mutually non-exclusive.

Final deployment cannot be controlled in the manner you like though...
A image will be generated, and the whole path starting at / will be
within. It might be possible for you to insert a post-image-unpack
filter to do the neccessary things though. Or, you could just skip all
these kluges and deploy them directly on the main server, where the
installation path is guaranteed to be rw.

A side effect of supporting other prefixes is being able to let
non-root users create their own little environments.
