Jack,

My current guess is that this is a bug in Fedora Core 2.  I did some
testing on RH9 and it works fine.

I suspect what is happening is that FC2 has a bug in the handling of
/proc for setuid processes.

I'm sorry it took so long for me to do the experiments on RH.
