mysql-direct authentication lossage

Has anybody else had problems connecting to MySQL lately?  I am getting the
following error with ACL 6.2 and MySQL 4.1.11 on FreeBSD.

mysql error 1251:
Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server;
consider upgrading MySQL client
   [Condition of type DBI.MYSQL:MYSQL-ERROR]
