AllegroCL 8.1 Free Express Edition for Linux + Emacs/Slime hanging on startup

Hello all,
I wanted to basically try out allegrocl before buying it.
#1) Does the free edtion work with slime.

I invoke allegrocl via emacs with C-u M-x slime RET
/usr/local/acl81_express/alisp.

#2) my slime setup works just fine with sbcl and clisp with no problem.

This is all i get when try to start allegrocl with emacs/slime:

it just hangs there forever i means hours if i let it.  Funny thing
from a terminal shell i start alisp
load swank-loader.lisp, swank-backend.lisp, and swank-allegro.lisp
with no problems.

I'm using the latest cvs slime, GNU emacs 21.4.1, NetBSD 4.0 with
linux emulation.
If slime does work with the free trial edition of Allegro CL 8.1, are
there any specials files that needs to be loaded to make things work
with it.  I even tried removing slime fasl changing the permissons on
the directories and files for slime and allegrocl from root to my
regular user no avail.
