sorry about the missing subject line on the previous message.

note also that it's not intended as a release. in particular i've not 
yet figured out why "tar" in more "zxvf" steadfastly refuses to write 
the file names to the pipe.

i would like to hear if any of the changes cause problems for other 
implementations.
