I am more a maintainer and builder of derivative systems than a
builder of lisp infrastructure, so my mileage does vary.  I'm inclined
to prefer a smooth extension of asdf than a bumpy jump to a new
version.  I realize that backward-compatibility is a plague, but I
tend to feel that the benefits of a virtually universally-adopted
system definition standard outweigh the costs of fussing around with
the existing asdf.

I'm also wondering what would lead us to a new design that would
address these fundamental misdesigns.  Are people, the likes of those
whom Christophe mentions in his email (Peter van Eynde, Edi Weitz,
Nikodemus Siivola, Gary King, Dan Barlow and Christophe) interested in
convening a group to carry out a more fundamental redesign, possibly
with circulation of some candidate spec drafts?  I think that this
would be the best outcome, but am obviously in no position to sign up
this quantity and quality of talent to the task.

Failing such an optimal outcome, I'd prefer to see asdf continue its
messy progression forward.

What I fear is that someone will sit down and bash out an a2sdf that
will fragment the healthy consensus, without being a good enough
improvement over the current asdf.
