Time has moved on, but this problem remains. Can I do a quick canvas, and find out who (or what pieces of software) are in fact using this preferences mechanism, and what people's ideal resolution is? The timescale for this is that I would like some solution to be implemented in the next couple of weeks, so that the next SBCL release doesn't have a problem.
