ASDF component-self-dependencies

Does anyone have a clear understanding of the role of this function, and
its relationship to component-depends-on?  Examination suggests that the
coder considered the possibility that component-depends-on would
overgenerate, returning some dependencies that actually didn't match the
component, and these dependencies would be weeded out by
component-self-dependencies.  Is that correct?

Anyone know why component-self-dependencies is a generic function?  It's
internal, so I assume that the ASDF extender is not expected to extend
this generic function.

If someone can clue me in, I will try to write up a documentation string
that can be inserted into the source....

Also, am I correct in thinking that component-depends-on is a candidate
for having its standard method combination replaced by append?  Or would
that be a mistake?
