I thought that Gary already had a scheme for doing this.  I'm afraid I
know no more (I wish some of Gary's add-ons, like the invaluable
asdf-binary-locations, would just come with ASDF, though not turned on
by default...).

BTW, Gary has been trying to wean us off cclan-list@ sourceforge and
onto [email protected].
